The storm began like any other. Summer storms here are generally fierce and brief, but this one turned into a monster.

When it increased in intensity, I wondered if some of the cars in the parking lot might get damaged (hail storms here last rarely longer than 5 minutes) . . .

. . . and if the sewers would back up, as I'd heard they did in some places in last week's storm.

Just when I thought it was lessening up, it doubled in intensity. The storm continued for another 15 minutes.

10 minutes into the storm, the parking lot looked like a skating rink.

By the time the rain ended, it looked like winter outside.

I hoped the drains would take it all, because if they backed up I could have water flooding right up to my window.

I don't know if you can see it, but the back alley was a river of water flowing West.
